A Republican Precinct Committeeperson represents the GOP voters of his or her precinct at the County Republican Party level. But most importantly, a Republican Precinct Committeeperson is the face of the GOP within their precinct. They are the people who are legally and electorally responsible for getting out the vote on Election Day. PCs can canvas, deliver campaign literature, sample ballots and serve as year-round campaign volunteers for the party in every election.

 

In many cases, a Republican Precinct Committeeperson might be the only party official a voter ever meets in person.

What are the duties of a PC?

This volunteer position is really what one makes of it. Some do more than others. But, in essence, the job of a Republican Precinct Committeeperson all about helping to grow the GOP and working to deliver the maximum number of Republican votes from his or her precinct on Election Day. Precinct Committeepersons comprise the core of any grassroots effort and no political campaign can be successful without these front line GOP ambassadors.

 

Another duty of a precinct committeeperson or woman is to listen to and work with the public. Electing party leaders who represent their communities is a primary duty of a PC. It is important to spend time with voters in your jurisdiction and learn about their needs and interests.

The principle means of doing the job is just an extension of what most people already do — talking to the neighbors.

Becoming a PC

There are two methods: through an election or becoming appointed by the Chairman.

The Kane County Clerk's website will have all the details you need to get on the ballot in order to become an elected PC:

You must meet the legal requirements: must be a United States citizen, must be at least 18 years of age, and must be a registered voter of the precinct.

STEP 1: Fill out the Precinct Committeeperson Primary Petition and print the completed form. Meet the Signature Requirements. Petitions must contain the valid signatures of a minimum of 10 registered voters of the Republican Party in the precinct in which you are running. Helpful tip: We recommend getting at least twice the minimum number of signatures required. Be the first to sign your Petition, you can both sign (as a registered voter) and circulate your own Precinct Committeeman Primary Petition.

STEP 2: File Nominating Papers. The following documents must be filed with your Office of County Clerk:

Precinct Committeeperson Petitions (All petition pages must be numbered; bound (staple or hole-punch/fasteners); and notarized.)

Statement of Candidacy  (Also must be notarized. And note the referenced Statement of Economic Interests is NOT required for Precinct Committeeperson or any other party office.)

What is the time commitment?

This volunteer position is really what you want to make of it. Some Precinct Committeeperson are more active than others. And everyone understands that people get busy with work and family responsibilities. You can commit as much or as little time as you’re willing and able. However, ideally you should be willing to spend at least a few hours each month, with the most crucial time obviously being election season.
